printshop intro

As printers, we are obsessively detailed. And as partners, we’re committed to collaborating with our clients to get the best possible result. Whether it’s on a metallic paper or wood, with one ink or ten, we sweat the small stuff, so only the best leaves our presses.

FAQs

DEPOSIT

We require a 10% deposit on all work over $1000.

MINIMUM

All jobs are quoted at a minimum of 50 posters. We can print a run of 5, but you’ll be charged the rate of our minimum, 50 posters.

TURNAROUND

Turnaround times vary depending on our current workload. Depending on the size and scope of the project, we can typically have a job completed within 10-15 business days of submission, not including shipping. We include turnaround times with every estimate, but we encourage clients to submit orders as far in advance as possible to avoid any hiccups. Shipping terms and times are negotiated on a project by project basis, depending on the client needs.

SHIPPING

Our team takes great care in packaging orders for shipment so as to avoid damage in transit. We ship with FedEx and UPS, dependent upon the client’s preferences, deadlines, and other variables. We are not responsible for shipment delays at the hands of FedEx/UPS, and cannot refund printing charges based on carrier delays.

PRESS CHECKS

If you prefer to give the all-clear in person, we are happy to accommodate. Once we’ve ironed out a timeline, we will schedule a time for you to come in and approve the colors in real life with your very own eyeballs.

CAN I COME VISIT YOUR PRINT SHOP?

Sure! We love meeting other artists and showing them around the studio, but it’s best to shoot us an email beforehand. We’d hate for you to swing by only to find the studio empty because we’ve all left to shovel tacos into our mouths.

INK FLOODS

Someone call FEMA, because printing a flood of ink can be a disaster. Instead of printing edge-to-edge ink floods, consider printing on a colored paper. Your paper and your printer will thank you for it!

CAN YOU PRINT ON SOMETHING WE PROVIDE YOU?

Of course! Typically we’ll ask for a sample of your material (wood, specific paper, acrylic) before accepting the job to make sure we can print on it. If it all looks good, we’ll have you send us the material, with some overage just to be sure we have enough set up and test with.

MAKE IT SHINY

We can make just about any color metallic by adding a powder to the ink. Please note that this is comes at an added cost.

CAN YOU SET THIS UP FOR ME?

We totally understand that setting up separations and adding trapping can be a bit daunting. Our team can handle it for you, at $50/hour, with a minimum of $50. We do not distribute the printer files we make, but we will keep them on file in case you’d like to reprint them with us.

CAN IT GLOW IN THE DARK?

Sure! Please note where you’d like glow inks to be used in your file, and don’t hesitate to ask us if you have any questions about these inks.

CAN I HAVE SOME EXTRA?

We almost always have overage on a job, but not 100% of the time. Please order the exact number of prints you need!

CAN IT BE ON DIFFERENT PAPER?

Of course! We can print on just about any kind of paper, and have great relationships with top-notch paper manufacturers, who can help us find the right fit for you. Our default white paper is 100# Cougar Natural, but we regularly print on French Paper, and have printed on holographic and metallic papers, too.

CAN YOU PRINT SOMETHING OTHER THAN 18x24”?

For sure. We can print as large as 26”x40,” and just about as small as you’d like. We start with 20”x26” master sheets, which can be further divided to accommodate smaller posters, invites, or cards. With smaller sizes, please note that there will be a higher cutting cost. Please get in touch with us regarding smaller cuts for an estimate.

CAN YOU SPLIT FOUNTAIN?

Definitely, at an extra cost. Due to the handmade nature of split fountains, we cannot guarantee exact blends as they appear on your computer, and the fade will vary slightly from print to print. Please note where you would like a split fountain on your files.

WILL YOU SAVE THE SET-UP FOR MY JOB?

We reclaim our screens after every job, so we are unable to save your screens. We can, however, hold onto the transparencies used to burn your screens if you plan on ordering a reprint in the future.

Best Practices

DPI

The “dots per inch” are very important to ensure the highest possible resolution in your prints. We recommend saving your files at a minimum of 300 dpi to avoid and pixelation or sawtoothing on press.

COLOR MATCHING

We mix our inks by hand, and can match just about any Pantone color. We most frequently use the Pantone Uncoated Formula Guide, and strongly recommend that you choose your inks from a physical Pantone book rather than choosing them from Illustrator or Photoshop. Because computer monitors vary greatly from screen to screen, this ensures the closest possible match. However, we are also very comfortable matching to a digital comp. We have years of experience and fresh eye prescriptions that ensure a close match and crisp color harmony.

REGISTRATION

Precise registration can make or break a poster, and we take great care in setting a job up properly. We have several techniques for locking in tight registration, depending on the project, and we’re always happy to add our marks to your files, or provide you with a template upon request. Crosshairs and trim marks are our best friends.

TRAPPING

Trapping is a technique for printing overlapping artwork where two or more colors meet. In short, it adds a bit of padding to the initial layers, which allows for a buffer if there are slight mis-registrations or paper growth due to humidity or floods of ink. If your artwork is butt-registered and does not allow for trapping, there will most likely be hairlines in the final product. We also have a one-sheeter on trapping available by request.
